I'll check it out.

You should listen to "go on, little pilgrim" by "i am erth", that's what I've been listening recently.

ok I have to admit I didn't listen to the actual band you've suggested, but you made me immediately find and play some Steely Dan and I hadn't listened in years. thanks, laeth! :) p.s. miss you on twitter, but happy to read you here.

Okay FINE. All of my Substack people keep recommending me things to buy lately, i swear you're all trying to drive me to poverty.

Jokes aside, i like this. I've never really heard Portuguese before, i like the sound of it. Or maybe it's just this particular woman's voice. I dunno. To me it kind of sounds... Slavic? Even though i know by the words it's not, when i pay attention. It barely sounds anything like Spanish, despite being much closer. Is that a feature of Portuguese, or just some quirk of this singer in particular?

that feature of slavic (particularly russian) phonetic similarity with portuguese is country wide, but perhaps especially with lisbon's accent (which the singer has, but i think you would find the same with any portuguese). we close almost all our vowels in normal speech, quite unlike brazilian portuguese. the words are similar in form to spanish, but like brazilians, most spanish dialects have lots of open vowels, most i'd say. hence the phonetic mismatch despite the proximity in form.
